For Rigby | Relaxing Original Piano Solo
Переглядів 667Місяць тому
Wouldn't you agree that there's just something special about the unconditional and pure love between pets and their owners? It's just... good. Plain and simple. Rigby is one of my two dogs, and not only is this piece dedicated to her, but it's also inspired by her unique personality: playful but calm, a bit coy, somehow majestic but in a tiny 15lb body, and of course she loves to sleep! I've tr...

The "Largo" second movement from Dvořák's 9th Symphony, "From the New World." This must be one of the most beautiful and recognizable melodies in all of classical music, and I've done my best to transcribe a pianistic arrangement of the entire movement... yes... not just the main theme like you usually see, but the entire movement... all 127 measures and 13 minutes of music, including the lovel...

Valentine's Day is just around the corner! It's been 5 years since I last wrote an original piece inspired by the "season of love." In the Bleak Midwinter | Calm Piano Christmas Arrangement

It wouldn't be the holiday season around my home without a soft, lullaby style, arrangement of a classic tune. "In the Bleak Midwinter" is a beautiful hymn originally written by English classical composer, Gustav Holst. I've given it the "Szczepanek" treatment with the most beautiful interlude I could come up with, and a signature semi-ostinato style accompaniment. I hope you enjoy, and happy h...

    First off, I appreciate the multi-camera angles with differential zooming speed (automated, I assume). Quite a sophsticated setup, which is not a surprise knowing you. Second, for some reason, your Kawai sounds more 'Kawai' (brassy) than usual. Third, I'm curoius as to why you are reading the score, since you composed this piece. I have noticed that also on the live streams, some of the composers who played their own pieces had the score in front of them. How come?

    • @CharlesSzczepanek
      @CharlesSzczepanek 5 днів тому

      Thanks, Antonio! Yes, the zooming and panning is all done in post. I’d love to someday acquire a motorized slider and/or motorized jib, but at about $5,000 a pop it’s not exactly a priority for my channels haha. I do miss the changes in perspective you get when an actual lens moves through space, but I’ll settle for a similar outcome in post… for now at least :-) About the piano… the “new” hammers are now over a year old and have a fair amount of play-in. I’m also playing more forte and fortissimo throughout this piece than I have in the recent past. It’s been long enough that I could, potentially, ask my technician to voice down the hammers, but if I’m honest, they are both too bright and also not bright enough for my taste. Under soft playing, I like the current tone quite a bit. I wish it had just a bit more “zing,” but it’s pretty good. Under louder playing, the tone just kind of breaks down a bit… and I’m also holding back even here in this recording. The louder tone is too bright in that it loses some depth and warmth, but also not bright enough in that there truly aren’t the brighter overtones that I’d really like to hear. Almost like… the first overtone above the fundamental is over-emphasized, but the rest of the overtones above that don’t have enough emphasis. I didn’t love forte on the new hammers during the first few months when they were really fresh, because, there wasn’t any change in overtones from piano to forte… it was just one color that got louder. Now there’s a change, but it’s a little one dimensional. Because of all of that, I’m hesitant to ask my tech to soften them at all because I don’t want to go back to the single color tone. Maybe he’ll have some idea of something else to do, so I’ll ask when he’s back around again. And about score reading… composed and well-practiced and fully memorized are 3 very different things. So yes, I composed this piece; because of that I have a deeper understanding of my own use of harmony, compositional tools, melodic shape, and intention than someone else would. I also tend to compose in ideas and textures that come *more* naturally to my hands, so in turn I usually don’t need to practice my own stuff as much as other music. But only good and extended practice will ever lead to memorization. You could say that I, as the composer, have2 of the 4 pillars of memory well built from the inception of the composition… analytical memory and aural memory. But without extended practice, there is no building of muscle memory or visual memory. Because I typically only have a handful of hours to devote to practicing any of my pieces before I need to record them, it’s never anywhere near close to the amount of time truly needed to memorize every single note and all of the subtle differences from one phrase to another… for example… does the left hand go to the 5th or the octave, or step… and which one am I in the middle of? And is the right hand in thirds here or single notes… when does the 3rd get added to the octave? Etc. Memorizing all of those details simply takes time, and much more time than just a few hours of learning it and running it in preparation to record. So when you see a video of mine where I’m not using the score, you can assume I’ve had *at least* 20 or 30 hours of practice on that particular (usually 5-minute long) piece. If the score is in front of me, it’s probably closer to 5 or fewer hours of practice. Sometimes the difficulty of my piece or arrangement will necessitate memorization because the hardest phrases *need* so much time to get accurate. But when it’s not THAT hard, I usually can’t afford to spend my time doing all of that extra practice when… who knows when I’ll be needing to perform the piece again for the 2nd time. It could be in 6 months or it could literally be never. That’s my personal perspective on performing my own compositions… I’d bet that other composers would have similar reasoning. :-)

    • @CharlesSzczepanek
      @CharlesSzczepanek 5 днів тому

      Happy-go-lucky is a great characterization! This time, not a middle “sleep” sequence, but… she does this thing where she will sit up, next to me on the couch, and put one paw on my arm and gaze, unblinking, at me. If I ignore her, the paw goes to my shoulder… then it’s two paws… and then the head comes down to rest on my shoulder… and she still won’t have blinked lol. So that middle bit is a musical representation of those moments where she goes from fun and playful to very calm, loving, and (usually) politely asking for pets lol.

After the concert, David, to show his thanks to the choir, he sang, Be Still, My Soul to them. He is accompanied by just a piano.
